American Coco Gauff defeats Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva in straight sets to march into the semi-finals of the Italian Open.
World number three Coco Gauff quelled the challenge of seventh seed Mirra Andreeva with a 6-4 7-6(5) victory on Wednesday to reach the Italian Open semi-finals for a second successive year.
Coco Gauff told the Italian Open crowd that they are welcome to boo her for a "controversial" opinion shared during her on-court interview. The American had defeated Mirra Andreeva 6-4, 7-6 (5) to reach the semi-final, before she was asked for her stance on different types of pasta.
Gauff’s victory comes just days after another major moment in Rome: the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pope, who was chosen last week at the conclusion of the papal conclave. The event drew global attention to the Vatican — including from Gauff herself.
Coco Gauff marched into the semifinals of the Italian Open on Wednesday by beating Mirra Andreeva in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7/5).
Gauff has also been playing doubles alongside Alexandra Eala, who reached the Miami Open semi-finals earlier this year. The pair have enjoyed a strong start to their campaign in Rome and remain in with a chance of landing the title. They will go up against the Italian duo of Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani on Wednesday afternoon.
