President Donald Trump has taken his contentious court battle over mass deportations of alleged international gang members to the Supreme Court, asking the justices to side with a dissenting Trump-appointed circuit court judge and immediately lift a lower court's block on those deportations.

The Justice Department in a filing asked the court to lift Washington-based U.S. District Judge James Boasberg's March 15 order calling for a temporary halt of the summary removals of the Venezuelans while a legal challenge to Trump's invocation of the Alien Enemies Act to justify the deportations plays out.

Trump has asked the Supreme Court to overturn a ban on his use of an obscure wartime law to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members without due process.
